Reasons to Consider Ground Mounted Solar
When considering the addition of solar for their homes, most people immediately think of installing rooftop solar. Truth is, solar panels can be fixed in many ways to meet any project requirements and preferences, including the installation of a ground mounted system. Here is a list of reasons to consider a ground mounted solar system for your property.
1. Your Roof Is Very Small or Complex
If your roof is small or has multiple planes that would not allow for enough panels to fit on it, a ground-mount may be a more economically viable solution. However, we have installed solar arrays on many complex rooftops, so let us check out your home if you are still interested in rooftop solar.
2. Your Roof Is Not Suitable
Your roof may have too many obstructions for a solar array to fit on your roof (chimneys, pipes, skylights), or it may be too heavily shaded by trees to produce a viable amount of energy. In this case, it would be a great alternative to look at the rest of your property and see if a ground-mount system could be installed.
3. Your Roof May Not Get Enough Sunlight
In the Northern Hemisphere, solar panels produce the most energy when they are south-facing, and can still produce enough energy to be worthwhile if they’re facing the East or West. We look at your roof’s orientation, or azimuth, to estimate the production of a solar array. If your roof does not have a viable south-facing plane, a ground-mount can be installed that will face south for ideal energy generation. If your roof is significantly shaded but other parts of your property are not, a ground-mount might be the way to go.
4. Local Restrictions
You may be part of a community or historical district that prohibits solar from being installed on the roof. In some cases, a ground-mount could be installed so you can produce your own renewable energy and not break any codes or regulations for your home.
5. Aesthetics of Your Home
You may just not want solar on your roof. If you would love to save thousands of dollars on energy bills over the years and want to produce your own clean energy but do not want a solar array on your home, that’s okay! You can have a gorgeous ground-mount solar array in your backyard if there’s enough room.
