SMART Program Incentives

Time to Get SMART

The SMART (Solar Massachusetts Renewable Target) program launched on November 26, 2018, offering a new incentive structure for residents installing a new solar system. Check out the graphics below for a summary of the available incentives and contact us to find out what you can expect with a new solar array for your home or business.

Under SMART, new solar system owners will be compensated by their utility company at a rate that includes an incentive amount in addition to the value of the energy produced. SMART incentives are currently available to Eversource, National Grid, and Unitil service areas.

Incentive rates vary based on location, size, and utility provider, and are locked-in for 10 to 20 years depending on the system size. The solar energy will offset your monthly energy costs first, then you’ll be paid for any excess production each month.

Starting on the November 26, 2018 launch all new solar systems can be part of the program on a first come, first serve basis. It pays to get onboard early, too. SMART is a declining block program, so the amount of the incentive available will decrease by 4% each time a capacity block is filled.

There’s opportunity to increase your SMART incentive rate by installing innovative solar solutions. For example, building a solar canopy or including battery storage to your array will increase your per-kWh incentive.
